Top 10 Phillies Moments of the 00's Moment 9

9. Kevin Millwood Pitches No Hitter April 27 2003

On April 27 2003 Kevin Millwood pitched the Phillies first no hitter since Terry Mullholland at the Vet. It was the Phantic's last birthday at The Vet and Kevin Millwood upstaged it. The only run of the game came in the first when Ricky Ledee hit a solo HR. Millwood then issued a walk to Ray Durham and got him out when he tried to steal second. Then Rich Aurilla walked in the 4th and he was stranded when Barry Bonds flew out. Then in the 9th he walked Ray Durham and he was stranded when Marquis Grissom flew out to end the game and preserve the no hitter. Kevin Millwood was traded from the Braves for Johnny Estrada in the offseason. Kevin did not pitch well the rest of the season and proved to be a bust but for that one day Millwood came up golden.

Top 10 Phillies Moments of the Decade Moment 10

Over the next six days we will be counting down the top 10 Phillies moments from the decade.

10. Phillies Close Out Veterans Stadium (2003)
The Phillies closed out an stadium that they played in since 1971. They won their first World Championship in it. The Vet served the city well for 32 years and in 2003 they closed up shop. After an season with tributes to all the great teams that played in the Vet the Phillies played the Final Innings on Sept 28, 2003 against the Braves and they lost. After the game they had the closing ceremony and the greatest players in team history along with the 2003 Phillies put the old stadium to rest. Mike Schmidt ran the bases and Steve Carlton threw a pitch but the best moment came when Tug McGraw who was battling a brain tumor threw the last pitch in Veteran Stadium history and sadly he died in January of next year. The late great Harry Kalas said "The Vet is like a 3-2 pitch to Mike Schmidt or Jim Thome its on a long drive its outta here."

Draft Rewind 2009 Jeremy Maclin

With the 19th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft the Philadelphia Eagles select WR Jeremy Maclin out Missouri. Who knew that Jeremy would be there but the Eagles traded and got their man. Jeremy shined in his rookie year with 55 catches for 762 yards and 4 touchdowns. He did a great job when Kevin Curtis went out with a injury. His best game came aganist the Tampa Bay Bucs in week 5 when he had 6 catches for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. The shining moment came when he made a great catch in the last minutes of the game winning drive in Week 16 against the Broncos. In his second year he is excepted to only get better. The only question for Maclin is who will be throwing him passes in 2010.

The Smoking Gun at The Nova Care Complex

Two new McNabb rumors came to light today. The first one is from profootballtalk.com and they are reporting that the Eagles and Raiders are talking a trade that would send McNabb and CB Asante Samuel to Oakland for Nnamdi Asomugha and a 2nd round pick. The fact that Eagles would give up two Pro Bowlers and get one Pro Bowler back plus only a 2nd round pick is smelling fishy. The next rumor is the Eagles only want a top 42 pick in exchange for Donovan McNabb according to yahoo sports, so the Rams,Raiders, and the Bills all fall under that category. In Philadelphia there is a smoking gun and where there is smoke there usually a fire. I think that there is a 50-75% chance McNabb is traded.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010

McNabb Rumors False

According to several reports, The GM of the St.Louis Rams calls the McNabb rumors "false" and " ridiculous". The trade which is reported as McNabb going to the Rams for the Rams 2nd round pick and Oshiomogho Atogwe. According to 610 WIP's Howard Eskin the Rams GM has said he has no talks with the Eagles about Donovan McNabb. Earlier in the day Andy Reid had said he was listening to deals about the Eagles three quarterbacks.

Eagles Trading McNabb Would Be a Big Mistake

If the the Eagles trade Donovan McNabb it would be the biggest mistake in franchise history and bigger then the Eagles not signing Reggie White. Donovan is still in the prime of his career and has a record of 92-49-1. Putting an unproven QB like Kevin Kolb would be even more of a mistake. This year in a substitute role Kevin went 1-1 and the only win was against the lonely Chiefs and he struggled against a great team in the Saints. If you put him full time even with the full snaps with the first string offense the Eagles will suffer greatly. With Donovan Mcnabb as QB the Eagles have gone to the playoffs every year except for two 1999 when he was a rookie and 2005. They have won 5 NFC East titles and went to 5 NFC Title games and 1 Super Bowl which they lost by 3 to the Patriots. If you want to be one of those naysayers that like to bag on Donovan then blame every on him but I won't because if you trade McNabb you would go back to being mediocrity at best and possibly of being the next Chicago Bears that can't find a QB. Trading McNabb would set the franchise back some years. Think about this in the 10 years before Mcnabb came the Eagles went to no NFC Title games and won no NFC East Championships. There are no guarantees that Kolb will ever be as good as McNabb and could be like a Ty Detmer, Bobby Hoying, Koy Detmer. I for one don't want to go back to that again.

Breaking News Bell is an Eagle

As per Adam Schefter the Saints will not match the offer sheet to Mike Bell and he is now an member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Phillies Spring Training Tidbits

The Phillies will see Brett Myers on Thursday when the Astros come to Bright House Field to play the Phillies. It should be interesting to see the reaction he gets from the crowd here _ probably a mixture of cheers and boos, but I would guess mostly cheers.

It’ll be a big day at the complex. For one, Kyle Kendrick will be pitching for the Phillies in his competition with Jamie Moyer for the 5th starter spot. And, oh yeah, Roy Halladay will be pitching in the minor-league game that day as well. You might wonder why Halladay would throw in a minor-league game while Kendrick throws in a big-league game. One reason would be that Halladay will face the Astros the first weekend of the season, probably Saturday, April 10th, so there’s no reason for the Astros to get a feel for him.

Sure, there’s a chance Kendrick could face the Astros too that first weekend if he’s the 5th starter. But I think Moyer is going to start the season as the No. 5 starter. Even if Kendrick wins the job, the Phillies would be willing to take their chances with Houston getting to know him better than they would Halladay.

Add Injury to Insult Jeff Carter is Out 3-5 Weeks

Yes ladies and gentlemen things can get worse for the Philadelphia Flyers because Jeff Carter is out 3-5 weeks with a displaced fracture in his foot. The Flyers leading scorer hurt his foot in the first period of the Flyers lost versus the Thrashers last night. Jeff Carter who has 33 goals and 27 assists. The Flyers hope he can make it back for the playoffs. The only question is can the Flyers make the playoffs they are tied for 5th with the Senators and the Canadians and they play the Senators tomorrow. This is happened about a week after they lost Micheal Leighton for the season due an high ankle sprain.

The Flyers Problems in The Net

Since Ron Hextall the Flyers have had no franchise goalie.Ron Hextall had a win loss record of 240-172 with the Flyers. Since his last game in the 1998-99 here are the Flyers goaltenders. These are the major goalies.
1999-00 John Vanbiesbrouk 25-15 and Brian Boucher 15-9
2000-01 Roman Chechmanek 35-15 and Brian Boucher 8-12
2001-02 Roman Chechmanek 24-13 and Brian Boucher 18-16
2002-03 Roman Chechmanek 33-15 and Robert Esche 12-9
2003-04 Robert Esche 22-11, Jeff Hackett 10-10 and Sean Burke 6-5
2005-06 Robert Esche 22-11 and Antero Niittymaki 23-15
2006-07 Antero Niittymaki 9-29, Martin Biron 6-8, and Robert Esche 5-9
2007-08 Martin Biron 30-20 and Antero Niittymaki 12-9
2008-09 Martin Biron 29-19 and Antero Niittymaki 15-8

In the last 9 seasons the Flyers have had 8 goalies with a combined record of 337-258 the winning percentage of .556 while Ron Hextall had a winning percentage of .582 thats a plus winning percentage of .26. The other big difference is playoffs while with Ron Hextall the Flyers went to 3 Stanley Cups Finals and missed the playoffs 3 times and only 2 times when he was a full time starter. Since Hextall retired they only have missed the playoffs 1 time but have not found that goalie to take them to the Finals. Think about this year Ray Emery,Micheal Leighton, and Brian Boucher have a combined record of 37-30. They need to have a franchise goalie. The question is how. The simple answer is free agency in 2010 the only real good goalie available is Nabokov from San Jose and he is 33 and that is no long term fix. The draft is always an option but the Flyers do not have a first round pick but they can find one in the later rounds and maybe they might find that diamond in the rough. They also have Johan Backlund who they got last offseason. The other option is the trade market and the latest rumor is espn.com is reporting that the Flyers are intersted in trading for Bruins goalie Tim Thomas. Thomas who has fallen out of favor in Boston is 15-17 this year but he was 36-11 so maybe a change of scenery maybe helpful. Its not the only reason but its the biggest one imange for a moment if the Flyers traded for a Roberto Luongo who is 267-251 in that span and most of that was with the Panthers this year Roberto is 37-19. The other biggest question was should the Flyers trade for a goalie at the trading deadline and they should have, imagine if they traded for a Dwayne Roloson from the Islanders or Vokoun from the Panthers. They did not know at the time that Micheal Leighton would go down but when Emery went down they should have traded for depth.

Phillies Make a Comeback But Lose to The Orioles 5-4

The Phillies lose 5-4 in a game that was delayed about two hours due to rain. The Phillies starting pitcher Jamie Moyer was making his first start in a Grapefruit League game after starting three "B"games against the Blue Jays. The 47 year old southpaw had a solid start going 5 innings giving up 5 hits allowing 1 run and striking out an impressive 6 batters. But the offense could not wake up after the rain delay and only could scratch one run in the first eight innings as they got their first run since St.Patrick's Day in the second on a Paul Hoover solo home run. Placido Polanco got two hits.Mike Zagurski came on for the eight and struggled giving up four runs on 4 hits and 2 walks. The Phillies offense finally woke up in the ninth scoring 3 runs one on a double by Ozzie Chavez and two on the two run HR by Greg Dobbs. The Phillies will face the Yankees on Monday on ESPN. The Phillies are 8-6-1 in Spring Training.

Magic could not happen twice as Villanova lost today 75-68 to the Gaels of St.Mary's. Villanova was down as many as 12 in the first half and got it to 7 at halftime. The Wildcats came out with mission in the second half and tied it at 53-53 with 09:08 left to go in the game. The Wildcats had the lead with a score of 61-59 with 05:16 left to go in the game but the Gaels of St.Mary's was too much for them as the went on a 16-8 run to finish the game and win it the best play of game came when St.Mary's Mickey McConnell hit an amazing bank shot to give St. Mary's the lead for good. The Wildcats could not stop Omar Samham as he had a game high 32 points he also added 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Scottie Reynolds for the second game in a row as he only hit 2 of his 11 shots for 8 points. Corey Stokes lead the way for Villanova has he had 15 points. The Gaels of St.Mary's will now move on to their first Sweet 16 in school history. They will face the winner of Old Dominion and Baylor on Thursday. What ever team has to face St.Mary's will have to deal with Omar Samham who has dominated the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Villanova has a great future ahead as they will lose Scottie Reynolds who was a star in Villanova and will be missed but they have a another star in the making in Maalik Wayns who had has his freshman year under his belt and will look fill the big shoes of Scottie. The Wildcats also have a great player in Mouphtaou Yarou who will be a great center for Jay Wright.

Phillies bats take Spring Break as they lose 2-0 to The Orioles

Tonight was a great test for Kyle Kendrick as he was going up against a team he faced before this spring. Kyle passed but the Phillies bats did not. Kendrick went 5 innings giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, he walked 4 and struck out 4. The Phillies bats were silent all night and did not get their first hit until the bottom of the eight. The Orioles pitchers Brian Matusz and four other Orioles pitchers kept them silent until John Mayberry hit a single in the bottom of the eight and they lost 2-0 to the Orioles as the Orioles got their only two runs in the 5th. Tomorrow Phillies will send ace Roy Halladay as they visit the Tigers in Lakeland Florida.

The Philadelphia Eagles turn loose 3 players in the last 2 years where like

Temple No Match for Cornell as they lose 78-65 in the First Round

Cornell came into this game against Temple as everybody's upset pick, they lived right up to it winning 78-65. They took the lead early in the first and never gave it up. Temple got as close as six in the second half but could not get the stops and buckets they needed. The Big Red was lead by Ryan Wittman as he had 20 points and shot 4 for 6 from behind the three point line, Louis Dale lead the team with 21 points and Jeff Foote who added 16 points. The Owls were lead by Juan Fernandez with 14 points and Lavoy Allen added 11 points and 5 rebounds. The Owls could not stop the three as the Big Red hit 9 of 23 and 7 of those coming in the second half. The Owls who end the season with a record of 29-6 they have lost in first round for the third straight year. The Big Red who a lot experts believe are one the best teams to come out of the Ivy League in the last decade improve to a record of 28-4 and will face the winner of 4 seed Wisconsin and the 13 seeded Wofford on Sunday. If Cornell play like they did today Wisconsin or Wofford could have a lot of problems. Makes you wonder if Cornell should have been a higher seed maybe a 6 or a 7.

Players of the Game

Cornell
Louis Dale 21 pts and 7 assist and Ryan Wittman 20 pts and 4-6 from the 3pt line.

Temple
Juan Fernandez 14 pts

Kendrick vs Moyer Who Should Be the Phillies 5th Starter?

The biggest battle in Phillies spring training is Moyer vs Kendrick for the 5th starter spot. Kyle who has been be spectacular this Spring going 0-0 with a 0.00 era in 3 games 2 of them starts he has only given up 4 hits in 9 innings of work. Kyle will start tonight's game versus the Orioles and he is expected to go more then 3 innings of work possible 60-75 pitches. Jamie on the other hand has not even pitched in a "A" game as he has pitched in 3 "B" games against the Blue Jays and was rough up in his last start going 3 innings giving up 5 runs on 8 hits. That was the third time had faced the Blue Jays in a "B" game but unlike the first two times they brought their major league players. Another big factor in the the race for the 5th start is money as Moyer is owed around 6.5 million and its probably unlikely that the Phillies would that much money into the bullpen. I think Jamie gets the 5th spot and Kyle goes to the pen but like last year with the Chan Ho Park and the JA Happ situation if Moyer struggles early on it should be Kyle going to the rotation. If I were the Phillies I would put Kyle in the 5th spot because they way he has pitched in the Grapefruit League this spring. Tonight is a big night for Kyle and tomorrow Jamie will pitch in relief of Roy Halladay against the Tigers in Lakeland.

Breaking Flyers News goalie Micheal Leighton out for 8-10 weeks

Goalie Micheal Leighton will be out 8-10 weeks with a high ankle sprain according to philly.com. What this news means is a combo of Brian Boucher, Jeremy Duchesne, and Johan Backlund when he recovers from his injury with the Phantoms. Micheal has been huge since coming on for a injured Ray Emery. Micheal has a record of 17-9-2 and goals against of 2.83 plus a save percentage of .905. Flyers GM Paul Paul Holmgren did not get a goalie at the trade deadline and it might of cost the Flyers a better seed or even a playoff berth. Brian Boucher is 4-12-2 after being signed as a free agent this off season.

Villanova escapes with 73-70 win over Robert Morris in OT

Jay Wright started the game with Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher on the bench in what Jay called a teaching moment and almost finished it almost being victims to one the biggest upsets in NCAA Tournament history. Robert Morris took the lead early in the first half at 11-9 and did not give it up until overtime. Scottie despite only making 2 out of 15 shots had 20 points after making 15 of his 16 free throws. Robert Morris guard Karon Abraham had 23 points and was spectacular all game long. Villanova won this game but Robert Morris did not lose it, they played with grit and heart and had a 46-38 with 9:09 and like alot of top teams in the tournament Villanova found a way and scratched their way back and had it tied with a 01:23 left in the 2nd half. Robert Morris lost 3 players to fouling out including 2 starters. Villanova came out in the overtime and made the first 6 points to make it a 64-58 game. Robert Morris had it at 64-61 when Reynolds made his only three to make it 67-61 but Robert Morris stayed in it and had it at 68-67 with with 38 seconds left when Mouphtaou Yarou who also had great game with 17 points and 8 rebounds made two free throws to make it 70-67, Reggie Redding made 1 of 2 free throws to make it 71-67 with 16 seconds left in overtime, then Robert Morris guard Karon Abraham hit a great three to make a one point game with 11 seconds left to go. Scottie Reynolds made both of his free throws to make it a 73-70 game with 9 seconds left but Robert Morris could not get a great look at basket and Villanova won the game 73-70 and advance to face the 10 seed Saint Marys on Saturday after Saint Mary's beat Richmond 80-71.

Eagles News and Notes

The Eagles made two moves on Tuesday. First according to sources they have signed RB Mike Bell to a offer sheet worth one year at 1.7 million the Saints do have seven days to match the offer which a lot of experts don't think they will do. Second, they upgraded their defense by trading free agent bust Chris Clemons and their second fourth round pick to the Seattle Seahawks for DE Daryl Tapp. Tapp who has not lived up to exceptions when the Seahawks took him with their second pick out of Va Tech. A lot of experts believe that Tapp is an upgrade at the DE position and say he is ready to bust out. Tapp had 49 tackles and 2.5 sacks last year. In his career Tapp has 149 tackles and 18 sacks. Tapp signed a contract extension according to Pro Football Talk.

BackTo The Future Brown hits 2 HR'S Plus 4 RBI

Phillies prospect Domonic Brown had his Spring Training moment Tuesday in a 6-1 victory over the Tigers. He went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Brown crushed a solo home run to right field in the second inning in an impressive nine-pitch at-bat against Tigers ace Justin Verlander. He stroked a two-run home run to center field in the fourth against left-hander Phil Coke(a fan actually reached over the wall to catch the ball with his cap, but it counted).
