Cliff Lee Post Conference Transcript
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: Good afternoon and thanks for coming. I got another one of those best kept secrets. We’re obviously very pleased to have Cliff Lee back in the fold, to officially announce that Cliff is now joining us for five years with an opening for a sixth year. We’re pleased to have him back in the Phillies uniform and family. Cliff, congratulations and welcome back.
CLIFF LEE: Thank you. It’s been a whirlwind couple of years for me. It’s been a fun ride. This off season has been full of unknowns. It feels great to land back here in Philadelphia. I want to thank my agent and Ruben for working it out, my wife and kids for supporting me through all this, helping me with this decision. Here I am. I never wanted to leave this place in the first place. To get an opportunity to come back and be part of this team and this pitching rotation is going to be something that is historic, I believe. Can’t wait to get to spring training and get this thing going.
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: Before we open it up for questions, let me say a couple words here quick. To echo some of the things that Cliff said. I want to thank Darek Braunecker and welcome obviously Kristen back. Great to have you back. Darek, his wife Shelly. It was a tremendous effort on not just the Lee’s part, I don’t typically talk about the agents very much, but the relationship that Darek and Scott forged over the start of this process, even before that, played a huge role in this. I want to thank the Lees for accepting us back and obviously Darek, who had a huge part in this, as well.
Q. Ruben, when you had to trade away Cliff, I think it’s last year almost to the day, did you ever in the back of your mind say, You know what, I’m going to keep this open if there’s a shot at getting him back? For Cliff, I know you’ve texted teammates saying, I want to come back. Is this really where you’ve been the most comfortable and where your heart was
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: I’ll go first and tell you yes, actually. Fact of the matter is we all know what kind of impact Cliff had for us. He was extraordinary for us. We had an opportunity to do some different things and to acquire one of the best pitchers in baseball and keep him in our system for a long time. Frankly, did I want to move him? No. But I’m certainly pleased we had the opportunity to get him back.
CLIFF LEE: What was the question for me again (smiling)?
Q. You’ve texted some of your teammates since you left here about wanting to come back. Is this where you were most comfortable and is this where your heart is?
CLIFF LEE: I think for me to be here kind of says enough. I mean, I never held any grudges for being traded. I understand it’s a business and things like that happen. But from the moment I got here, from the first day, I knew it was something that was special, something that I enjoyed. You know, I wasn’t sure if I was going to get another opportunity to come back or not. The way things played out, I got that opportunity and here I am. When you sit back and evaluate your options, you get a chance to pitch in this rotation, with Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels, I mean, that’s all I needed to see right there. Give me a real option to do that, that’s it. That was the main thing, getting a chance to be part of that rotation with this team and what they’ve kind of established in the NL East, being the leader there. With this team, it was kind of a no brainer for me.
Q. Cliff, the Yankees obviously offered you a nice deal, the Rangers. At any time in this process did you tell Darek, Try to get something done with the Phillies, make this happen, this is where I want to go?
CLIFF LEE: Obviously since I’m here, there was some point in the process where I decided to tell the Phillies, Let’s make something happen. But, you know, there were a lot of variables, a lot of things going on there. Obviously, I enjoyed my time in Texas. We had a really good team. We made it to the World Series. That says enough for that team. It’s tough. Sometimes making these kind of decisions are tough. But when you get your family involved, let them tell you how they feel about it, you weigh the pros and cons of everything, kind of sit back and look at it from a distance, let some time expire, you weigh all your options. For me it became an easy decision with this pitching staff and with this team and what they’ve done over the past few years. Getting a chance to play in the National League, I prefer the National League over the American League style. I like to hit. I enjoy hitting. I like to face the pitcher versus the designated hitter. There’s definitely an advantage to that. It’s just a good team. It’s a good environment. They sell out every game here. It’s a good group of guys. It’s a close knit group. That’s what you want to be a part of. It’s going to be a special team. None of that is going to be given to us. We still have to go out there and earn it. I think with what we’ve got on paper and with the personalities that are around, the guys on this team, good things are going to happen.
Q. I know things are very positive being here, there’s a lot of good things you’re looking forward to. Maybe this has been on your radar all along. What happened a little bit with your family in New York, not so much a one to one, but…
CLIFF LEE: Let me clarify that thing. That was way overblown. No one came up to my wife and spit on her. You go to any stadium, fans start cheering, especially in the post season, fans are going to say something, they’re going to do things like that. That story was way overblown, it was false, and had zero to do with anything. Hopefully we can put that behind us because it was a non issue.
Q. On the positive side, some folks have talked about the phrase ‘leaving money on the table.’ In a way, your contract ends here where you could sign another deal. Is that an accurate statement that you left money on the table because it’s a very good contract here as well?
CLIFF LEE: I guess I did. I mean, I could potentially earn this is a shorter term, so whatever. It’s plenty of money. When you hit a certain point, enough is enough. It’s a matter of where you’re comfortable, where you’re happy, where your family is most comfortable, what team gives you the best chance to win. At this point it’s about trying to win championships. That’s really the number one thing for me. I think that team gives me the best chance to do that. That’s really it.
Q. Ruben, obviously you said that you wanted to keep Cliff, Cliff said he wanted to stay here. Why couldn’t you have offered this contract last year, because it sounds like Cliff would have taken it? Cliff, the expectations in this town are to win a World Series. I want to know how you feel about that. It’s World Series win or bust.
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: I guess people continue to feel that the reason why we traded him was because of a money issue. It was not. We did have a preliminary discussion prior to Cliff being moved. At that time, at the very least, we didn’t feel we were comfortable we were going to be able to keep him. That was a very short lived piece of the deal. We had an opportunity to acquire a player that we had a little bit more leverage over, so to speak. And for us it was always about trying to make sure that we could extend our opportunities to have a championship caliber club and to, indeed, keep some talent into our system. As I said, I was not comfortable with how things had gone in the early part of the negotiations. But for me, it gave us an opportunity to get Roy Halladay on our club, gave us an opportunity to bring Roy Oswalt to our club and this gentleman back to our club. Ultimately that is what puts us in a position where we are today.
Q. (No microphone.)
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: We just didn’t feel comfortable at the time.
Q. (Question regarding expectations of winning a World Series.)
CLIFF LEE: That’s perfect. I think every player going into spring training should have those expectations. That should be every team in baseball, in my opinion. That’s what I expect. I mean, I’ve been close the past two years and haven’t got a ring. That’s what it’s all about. I think this team is more than capable of doing that. That’s what I expect. That’s what everyone on this team should expect. I don’t see it any other way. I don’t see why you would think of it any other way. That’s the ultimate goal. Like I said, that should be every team’s ultimate goal. That’s the nature of this game.
Q. Cliff, you obviously left a big impact in a very short period of time on the fan base here, the people in Philadelphia. Did you continue to hear stories about the fact that they were frustrated you didn’t get to stay? How much did the relationship you forged with this city in a short period of time play a part? Who were other people that played a part in making the decision for you to come back?
CLIFF LEE: I heard stories. Being in Arkansas, you hear stories about what goes on in Philadelphia, you don’t know what’s true and accurate. I’m not the guy that gets on the Internet and checks and sees what the fans are saying about me being gone. Once I was gone, I put it behind me. I was a Mariner at that point. I started focusing on being a Seattle Mariner. But obviously I was disappointed. I enjoyed it here and loved it here. Like I said before, those things happen. The people that had an impact on my decision were my family, my wife, my kids, my agent, and me. I mean, that was really it. There wasn’t really a whole lot of people that had that much input on it. It was just a small group of people. We decided this is where we were going to be the happiest and give us the best chance to win.
Q. Cliff, we’ve been hearing Rangers, Yankees for so long. At the end the Phillies come in and get this done. Was there a point in time where you were deciding between just those two teams or were the Phillies in it all along?
CLIFF LEE: Going into the off season, I wasn’t sure how serious the Phillies were going to be. I really didn’t know. So I guess there was a point in time where it was just, in my mind, the Rangers and the Yankees. This kind of developed just in the past four, five, six days I think. I mean, there were some preliminary talks and stuff, but nothing really serious up until just the end of last week. It kind of came together pretty quick. In the back of my mind, I was always hoping that was a possibility. I didn’t know how serious and how much of a possibility it was.
Q. Ruben, given baseball’s business nature, getting Roy Halladay last year, the length of his contract, the amount, was he consulted in any way? For you, Cliff, all year were you thinking in the back of your mind, if The Phillies come after me, that’s the place I’d like to be?
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: Kind of glad that you asked that question. I did end up talking to Roy before we ended up moving forward. We went out of our element a little bit here. It’s something that, frankly, when you get into this realm of years and dollars, it gets a little (indiscernible). But I think this is a special circumstance. We put ourselves in a position with the staff that we had already kind of assembled to be able to add to it in this way, that they could make it pretty special. We felt that with his physical condition, I guess the nature of the marketplace, that this was the right thing for us to do ultimately. It was not an easy decision to get here. It took a lot of poking and prodding and introspection. But at the end of the day, I think we felt this was going to be the right thing for the organization and hopefully the right thing for Cliff and his family.
CLIFF LEE: Something like that. I know I really enjoyed it here. I know that getting to watch this team from afar, with the addition of Roy Halladay and Oswalt, Polanco, I mean, this team got better after I left. I felt like if I could be a part of that, it would make this team that much better. It was definitely something that I felt like if I got an opportunity and it was a fair opportunity that I would capitalize on it, for sure.
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: I could take you through a little bit of the chronology. Shortly after the World Series, I guess Darek and Scott had some dialogue about kind of keeping things alive in some way, shape or form. As far as getting deep in this, there were ebbs and flows, as what happens in many negotiations where at some points during the course of that short period where we were really kind of into it, we thought the deal was dead. It was really Kristen and Cliff and Darek coming back to us and saying, Listen, this is the place we want to be. That kind of got us over the hump, so to speak. They really, truly expressed to us I think this is the place they wanted to be, and that helped things move forward for us.
Q. Cliff, if the Phillies hadn’t come along in the last week, where do you think you would be?
CLIFF LEE: There’s no way to really know that. I don’t really know. You can ‘if’ and ‘but’. The fact of the matter is I’m here, I’m a Philly. I’m not going to look back, second guess anything, what if this, what if that. I’m here. I’m happy to be here. I’m excited and anxious to get this thing going. I’m not going to look at it any other way.
Q. Ruben, you talked about going out of your element to get this done. How much of the reason you were able to do it is because you have a personal knowledge and comfort level with Cliff that you just cannot typically have with a typical free agent?
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: I think part of that is that. But really for me we wouldn’t be here if we didn’t have the fans supporting us the way they supported us. It’s really plain and simple: we don’t sell out games, we don’t give ourselves a chance to be even in this stratosphere. The support we’ve gotten with our fans, the support I’ve gotten from David and our ownership group to be able to kind of go past where we would typically comfortable doing, I mean, and the fact that this can put together a pretty darn special rotation, I think those are the kind of things that pushed things forward for us.
Q. Cliff, when you were evaluating the Yankees’ offer, was there something that gave you reservations about playing or living in New York to wait to see if the Phillies would get involved?
CLIFF LEE: No. More than anything, I wanted to make sure that I had every option in front of me before I made a decision. I didn’t want to rush into anything. Once the Phillies got involved and I could tell that it was serious, it really could happen, it was a relatively easy decision to make, so… There wasn’t anything that scared me away from New York. I wasn’t scared to play there. I wasn’t any of that. It was just I wanted to have all my options in front of me. Once the Phillies were there, it was relatively close to everything, it was a no brainer for me.
Q. Ruben, a lot of people have wondered about your budget and everything off season, how much flexibility you had and such. How much more did you go beyond the call to get this done? What kind of flexibility do you have here fulfilling other needs on this team?
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: Well, I’ll answer the second part first. We’re no longer flexible (laughter). We’ve reached our flex point. But, again, after having talked internally, and obviously with David, this was a special circumstance. Frankly, I don’t want to speak too much to this. When you talk about checks and balances, for us it’s the absolutely right thing to do. If your strictly talking business, it may not. This is too important to the organization and I think it was too important to the present and future of our franchise not to go forward and do it.
Q. Ruben, if Jayson Werth takes your offer, are you able to make this signing? Cliff, you were friendly with Jayson. Have you spoken to him in the last few days about the kind of ironic way this has worked out?
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: I would probably say that I don’t think I’ve been smart enough to be able to do both things. At the same time, you know, we did have discussions about this internally with our scouts, the baseball people. Frankly, I don’t say this to slight our former rightfielder, but I think to a man we felt like this would have much more of an impact on our club moving forward because frankly I believe in pitching and defense winning championships. We’ve seen it over the last several years, that’s what wins World Series. If it comes down to a choice, frankly I’m pleased with the one we made.
Q. Cliff, you have been in a few cities in a short amount of time. What is it about the city here, Philadelphia, maybe not so much the team, but the city itself, that brought you back?
CLIFF LEE: I think the how do you put it intensity that you can feel when you get in the game. You can feel the volume. Every game has got an elevated feel to it compared to everywhere else. It’s completely different. I don’t know what the fans do to create that much more volume and excitement in the stadium, but it’s definitely something extra here. I don’t know what it is, but it’s something they’re doing. They get excited. They’re passionate fans. They understand what’s going on. They don’t need a teleprompter to tell them to get up and cheer, to do that. No, it’s exciting. It’s an historic town. I didn’t realize until I got here how interesting the city is. My family really liked it. I mean, that played a big part in it. Yeah, you know, the feeling of playing on the field feels different than anywhere else. I don’t know how to explain it other than you can feel the volume that’s created by the fans and their intensity.
Q. Cliff, most of us never know the life of a baseball player. How daunting to be able to settle down in one place, and what is it like having that task ahead of you, moving everybody up here, finally sort of unpacking?
CLIFF LEE: It’s a good feeling to know you’re settled, be in one spot for a while after bouncing around for a little bit. That’s what we were trying to do today, find a place where to settle. That’s going to be fun in itself, too. Finding a place, figuring out where to be. Obviously, I know we’re going to be here for five years. We have to make that decision about where we’re going to stay. That’s fun in itself. It’s part of the process. But I’m definitely glad that I know that this is it. Hopefully this is where I end my career. It’s no more getting traded and getting traded again and getting traded again. I enjoyed that, too. It was great to get to experience different organizations, how they go about things, play with different players in the world from Victor Martinez and C.C. in Cleveland, and to here with Utley and Howard, to Seattle with Ichiro and Felix Hernandez, and then Texas with Josh Hamilton, Mike Young, Vladimir Guerrero. I got an opportunity to play with the best players in the world. Now I get a chance to come back to the place that I felt like was the right fit for us. It’s been a fun ride, but I ended up back here. I’m looking forward to it. I think we’re going to do a lot of really good things here. I’m excited about it.
Q. Ruben, you mentioned the flexibility. Last week at the Winter Meetings you said you had conversations with Chad. Is that door closed now? Is the door closed for being out and getting another right handed bat?
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: I’ll never say ‘closed.’ Probably open it with a tooth pick. But we have to keep our eyes and ears open. But I would say I’m pretty comfortable, very comfortable, with the club going into spring training.
Q. Cliff, did you talk to Jayson at all?
CLIFF LEE: Yeah. I don’t know if I can say exactly how that conversation went down here, to be honest with you. I know once we both got on the free agent market, we talked about trying to get on the same team. Obviously when he signed with the Nationals and I signed here, it didn’t happen. When he found out I was coming here, he wasn’t the happiest person in the world. I’ll put it that way (smiling).
Q. Ruben, the flex point, you committed $300 million to three guys in Cliff, Ryan and Roy Halladay. Next year you have some decisions to make. Do you have the ability still to take care of business later on next year?
RUBEN AMARO, JR.: Yeah, that’s a great question. That’s one of the boxes you kind of put yourself into. Now you have to make choices. But I think it was one of the important elements of this. We felt again, starting pitching, I don’t know if there’s a more important element of the game. We felt if we were going to be stable in one area, try to work around that, that starting pitcher would be the thing. I think we put ourselves in a position to have as good a rotation as there is in the game. So for our long term success at the Major League level, we felt like this was the right thing to do.
Here I am.

The Philly Athletes I Am Most Thankful For
Phillies-Roy Halladay RHP-What a year Roy Halladay had going 21-10 and winning his second Cy Young Award. He pitched a perfect game in the regular season and the second no-hitter in postseason history.
Eagles- Desean Jackson WR- Desean is the most electric player in the league and with Micheal Vick at QB he is only gotten better.
Flyers-Claude Giroux- Could be the star of the Flyers. This season so far he has 12 goals and 11 assists. The Flyers signed him to a 3 yr extension and he will only get better.
Sixers Jrue Holliday PG- The Sixers got a steal in the 2009 NBA Draft as he will be the player they build around with Evan Turner being the other.

Roy Halladay Wins Cy Young
Phillies pitcher Roy Halladay has won his 2nd CY Young Award in a landslide vote getting all 32 first place votes. Halladay who the Phillies acquired in December pitched a perfect game in Florida in May. The 33-year-old right-hander, led the majors in wins (21) as he went 21-10, shutouts (4), complete games (9) and innings pitched (250 2/3). Should Roy Halladay be 2010 Sportsman of The Year?
According to a article on Philly.com, Sports Illustrated writer Jack McCullum has nominated Roy Halladay for SI's annual Sportsman of The Year. Roy Halladay in my mind should be the Sportsman of The Year because no one else in sports has had the year that Roy Halladay has had even though the Phillies did not win the World Series. Roy Halladay who went 21-10 with a 2.44 era,he had 9 complete games and 4 shutouts in over 250 innings. He became the first Phillies pitcher to pitch perfect game since Jim Bunning, first to win 20 games for the Phillies since Steve Carlton, and became the only the second player in MLB history to pitch a no-hitter in the playoffs since Don Larsen and he did that in his first start in the playoffs ever. Then he goes to win Game 5 of the NLCS after pulling a groin in the 2nd inning But off the field he is even more deserving to win the award he is always the first Phillie at park and last to leave. He is also the ultimate team player after his Perfect Game he gave everyone a watch that said "We did this together." There are no more deserving athletes in my mind then Roy Halladay.

Phillies Off Season Question Number 1 Can They Keep Jayson Werth?
The biggest question by far for the Phillies in the 2010-11 off season is will they keep outfielder Jayson Werth. The answer is probably no he wants way to much money for the Phillies. The Phillies also think if they go cheap with a platoon in right field they might get another front line starter. The platoon would involve rookie Dominic Brown with a possible partner in Aaron Rowand,Matt Diaz, and Jeff Francouer also don't count out the Phillies looking at Yankees outfielder Nick Swisher. The other big thing in the Werth negotiations is his agent Scott Boras as Boras always wants the most money in the world for his clients.

Andre Igoudala Did Not Ask For Trade
According to Philly.com's Kate Fagan Andre Igoudala did not ask for a trade as reported by ESPN. According to Fagan Andre did not ask to be traded if the Sixers where not winning by mid season. According to a Fagan's source, the "news" came from a statement Iguodala made -- saying he'd like to play for a winning team and that was twisted and did not mean he wanted to be traded. There was reports that the Bulls and Sixers where talking a Luol Deng-Andre Igoudala trade.

Phillies Hot Stove
This is gonna be one interesting off season for the Phillies. Already we know that most likely J.C Romero and Greg Dobbs will not be back and there is a chance that Jamie Moyer will not either. The biggest Phillies free agent is going to be RF Jayson Werth and he wants big money and I put the chances of him coming back at 40% the biggest reasons are money and Scott Boras. The other Phillies free agents are relief pitchers Chad Durbin and Jose Contreras, and Mike Sweeney. The Phillies will go into the off season looking for a starter could be a front line or a 4th or a 5th starter. If they lose Jayson Werth the could look for a platoon outfielder who can hit lefties to play with Dominic Brown. Possible other needs a reliever and maybe one or two bench players.

Phillies Decline Option on J.C. Romero
The Phillies have declined the 2011 option of lefty reliever JC Romero making him a free agent. JC who the Phillies signed in 2007 after he was released from the Red Sox was a big part of the 2008 World Championship. In 2009 he was suspended for 50 game and was injured and never got in a groove. In 2010 it was much the same only pitching in 60 games and throwing only 36 and 2/3's innings. He was owed 4.5 million dollars in 2011.

Phillies Advance To Third Straight NLCS Behind Hamels Complete Game Shutout
The Phillies win game 3 of the NLDS behind Cole Hamels complete game shutout. The Phillies got their first run of the game on a Orlando Cabrera throwing error of the bat of Carlos Ruiz scoring Placido Polanco. They got their second run of the game on Chase Utley's tenth career home run moving him above Jayson Werth on the club's all time list. That's all Cole Hamels would need as he pitched his first postseason complete game shutout giving up five hits and striking out nine. The Phillies let up only eleven hits to the best offense in the regular season in this series the fewest ever. Cole Hamels is the third pitcher to 20 years to earn a shutout victory in a postseason road series clincher. The Phillies will have to wait until at least tomorrow night to find out who they will face in Game One of the NLCS on Saturday, they will face either the San Fransisco Giants or the Atlanta Braves the Giants lead the series 2-1. When they do play on Saturday Roy Halladay will have ten days off he had eight days off in between clinching the division against the Nationals and the no hitter in Game one of the NLDS.

32 NFL Team Previews in 32 Days Day 11 Carolina Panthers
Day 11 is the Carolina Panthers.
Last years record:8-8 3rd NFC South
First Round Pick: Jimmy Clausen QB Norte Dame(RD2P48)
Best Pick: Jimmy Clausen QB
Offensive MVP: Running backs Jonathon Stewart and DeAngelo Williams
Defensive MVP: Jon Beason LB
X-Factor: The QB's
Projected Record: 3-13
Big Question: Will Jimmy Clausen be the QB to end the season?
Big Answer: Yes because they will be a bad this year. Even though they have weapons in running backs Jonathon Stewart and DeAngelo Williams and WR Steve Smith they still have a lot of holes. Matt Moore is the big key if they get good quarterbacking from him this team will be better then 3-13 but I think Jimmy will get in around week 10 or 11 when they find out if they are in the hunt. They have a good defense with linebacker Beason leading the way.
Day 12 is the Chicago Bears.

Best Pick:Demaryius Thomas WR
Offensive MVP: Kyle Orton QB
Defensive MVP: D.J. Williams LB
X-Factor: Kyle Orton
Projected Record: 5-11
Big Question: Can Kyle Orton lead this team?
Big Answer: Kyle Orton is a good QB but not a great one. He also lost wide receiver Brandon Marshall, Brandon Marshall is a huge hole to fill last year he had 101 catches the 2nd player in that category only had 54 catches and that was Jabar Gaffney. He will have Eddie Royal and rookie wide receiver Demaryius Thomas but still he is a rookie. They also lost Elvis Dumervil to a injury and could be out most of the year. The other question will be how other 1st round pick Tim Tebow does I think he can be a great QB in this league with a year off to learn the system and refine his NFL game. All in all this is gonna be a down year for the Broncos going 5-11.
Day 11 is gonna be the Carolina Panthers.

Day 9 is the Oakland Raiders
Last years record: 5-11 3rd in AFC West
First Round Pick: Rolando McClain ILB (RD1P8)
Best Pick:Rolando McClain ILB
Offensive MVP:Zach Miller TE
Defensive MVP: Richard Seymour DL
X-Factor: Jason Campbell QB
Projected Record: 8-8
Big Question: Can Jason Campbell be the QB the Raiders were looking for?
Big Answer: Yes, I think Jason Campbell is QB the Raiders were looking for and he will make this team a lot better. Last year with the Redskins he passed for 3,618 yds and 20 touchdowns. Last season the Raiders QB combo had 2,875 yds and 10 tds. He is an immediate upgrade over JaMarcus Russell, Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye. The good news JaMarcus Russell is gone he has been a bust since being drafted number one overall in 2007. Campbell also has some weapons in tight end Zach Miller, wide receiver Louis Murphy and if they can get anything out of 2009 first round pick Heyward-Bey it will be great. The defense is clearly the Raiders strong point with good players such as Richard Seymour,Thomas Howard,Kirk Morrison, and Nnamdi Asomugha. Add linebacker Rolando McClain to that mix and it could be even better. I say the Raiders could be anywhere from 6-10 to 10-6 but I am going with 8-8.

Day 8 is the Seattle Seahawks.
Last years record: 5-11 3rd in NFC West
First Round Pick: Russell Okung OL Oklahoma St (RD1 Pick 6)
Best Pick: Tie Russell Okung OL and Earl Thomas Safety (RD1 Pick 14)
Offensive MVP: Tie RB Justin Forsett and TE John Carlson
Defensive MVP: David Hawthorne LB
X-Factor: The QB's
Projected Record: 5-11
Big Question: Who will be the starting QB at the end of the year?
Big Answer: I am gonna say Charlie Whitehurst will be the staring QB at the end of the season because I think the Seahawks will be out of it and will be looking towards the future. If the Seahawks get a great QB play from Matt Hasselbeck the Seahawks could be a dark horse in the weak NFC West. They have an upcoming running back in Forsett and a great young tight end in John Carlson and you can not forget about wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh. They also need a great effort in their defense which has S Earl Thomas from Texas coming in and linebacker David Hawthorne. If they get all of those they could be a 8-8 or 9-7 team but that is a big if.

Best Pick: Tyson Alualu
Offensive MVP: Maurice Jones-Drew RB
Defensive MVP: Daryl Smith LB
X-Factor: David Garrard QB
Projected Record: 8-8
Big Question: Can the Jaguars compete in the AFC South?
Big Answer: No, not with the teams ahead of them the Colts,Titans, and Texans all play in the same division as the Jaguars in the AFC South. But the Jaguars will be a good team with Maurice Jones-Drew and WR Mike-Sims Walker. The biggest question is David Garrard at QB can he become a reliable QB for the Jaguars or will he just be a mediocre QB if he struggles be aware that backup QB Luke McCown will be more then ready. Coach Jack Del Rio is on the hot seat.

Day 6 is the Kansas City Chiefs.
Last years record:4-12 last in AFC West.
First Round Pick: Eric Berry S Tennessee (5th overall)
Best Pick: Tie Eric Berry S and Dexter McCluster
Offensive MVP:Matt Cassel QB and WR Dwanye Bowe
Defensive MVP:Tamba Hali DE
X-Factor: Matt Cassel QB
Projected Record:4-12
Big Question: Can the Chiefs be a player in the AFC West?
Big Answer: Even though I have them at 4-12 I think if they can good quarterback play from Matt Cassel and good running from running back Jammal Charles I think the can. The AFC West is a very weak division but if the defense can play at least adequate they can be players. But its gonna take a lot for all of those things to happen. They have a great receiver in Dwayne Bowe and drafted a fast WR/RB weapon in Dexter McCluster who a lot people compare to a young Brian Westbrook.
Next up on Sunday is Jacksonville Jaguars.

32 NFL Team Previews in 32 Days Day 5 Cleveland Browns
Did not get a chance to post this last night but here is day 5 the Cleveland Browns.
Last years record: 5-11 last AFC North
First Round Pick: Joe Haden CB Florida (7th overall)
Best Pick: Colt McCoy QB Texas (3rd round 85th overall)
Offensive MVP:Josh Cribbs WR/KR/PR
Defensive MVP:Eric Wright CB
X-Factor: Josh Cribbs WR/KR/PR
Projected Record: 2-14
Big Question: Will Colt McCoy start this season? if so when?
Big Answer: The Browns will be horrible enough that in week 8 they will turn to Colt McCoy who is the future of this team. I have Josh Cribbs has the X-Factor because if he can not be who he was the last couple of years this team will be horrible if does keep it up they will be better then 2-14 maybe 4-12 or 5-11. The running is also important as Jerome Harrison must keep up what he was doing at the end of the year or they will be in even more trouble. The defense is bad even though the addition of 1st round pick Joe Haden will help out they have a lot holes. The biggest addition on the field in the off season was probably Jake Delhomme former QB of the Carolina Panthers who will start of the season as the starting QB. The biggest addition of the field was the hiring of former Packers and Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren as President of the Cleveland Browns he is a great football mind and will turn this team around in about 3 years till then its gonna be a long season of football for the dog pound.
A little later on I will post Day 6's team the Kansas City Cheifs.

Rod Thorn Press Conference
Peter Luukko: Good morning, and thanks to everyone for coming out on short notice. We’ve had a pretty exciting off-season with the 76ers this year, and we’ve made a lot of positive moves. We started with the hiring of Doug Collins. Ed Stefanski hired Doug; Doug is a Sixer. Doug also brings an identity to our team. If you look at our team now, we’re going to work hard, we’re going to play good defense, we’re going to run with the ball, and bringing Doug in begins to bring us that identity of what the Sixers are. If you’re going to get better you’ve got to get a little lucky, and we moved up in the lottery to get the #2 overall pick and get Evan Turner. It’s important for a team moving forward that you have those good picks. It’s really a pick and an opportunity that we haven’t had in a decade.
As we further solidify that identity, and move on I’d like to announce that we have hired Rod Thorn as the new President of the 76ers. This is an outstanding opportunity for our club. If you look at Rod’s background, it’s really unprecedented. The years of experience and basketball knowledge that Rod has – he’s been a player in this league, a coach in this league, he’s ran a team, been the General Manager of a team, and also worked in the NBA office for many years. This is a real opportunity for our organization, and it’s a very unique opportunity.
To give you a little background as to where we came about thinking about bringing Rod in is when we saw that the Nets and Rod were going to part ways, Ed Snider and I said, ‘maybe we should talk to him.’ He had a great history with Ed Stefanski, they did a lot together. I had known Rod for a few years and we were talking about when they built this building [Wells Fargo Center] for the league, Rod had approved the locker rooms and officials rooms and all that. So if there is a problem in any of the rooms it’s all Rod’s fault. What we decided is that we should talk to Rod, so Ed Stefanski talked to Rod and met with him and they really hit it off. You could see the experience and the vision that Rod has for an NBA club.
After that Rod came down and met with me and we went over more details about the organization and how we could all work together, and we came to an agreement. We’re very excited about it and it’s a great opportunity to add depth to our organization, and continue that identity of what the Sixers will be. On the other end, it’s really exciting that Ed and Rod have an outstanding relationship. They’ve had a lot of success together: they went to two NBA Finals together, won four Conference Finals together, and it’s a great opportunity for us to strengthen our organization, go forward and put the best team on the court for the players, the fans, and the market alike. And with that, Rod, welcome to Philadelphia.
Rod Thorn: Thank you everyone. I appreciate all of those glowing words, and hopefully we’ll be able to do some really great things here. As Peter [Luukko] alluded to, my tenure with the Nets ended on the 16th of July, and sometime during that next week I got a call from Mr. Snider who wanted to talk with me and we had a meeting. That thing that impressed me about Mr. Snider was the passion he had. He cared, and he wanted to win. That is very much like my personality, and like Doug [Collin]’s personality, and just like Eddie [Stefanski]’s personality. You read and hear a lot of things, but in the meeting I had with Ed, that is a thing that really stood out to me. This organization wants to win. With me, as Peter pointed out, I’ve done a lot of different things over the course of time in professional basketball – 46 years now I’ve been in professional basketball. Having seen many different organizations with my time in the NBA, that’s the key thing. You’ve got to have a passion for wanting to win.
You have to have good player, obviously, but you have to have people that will work together in going forward. This is not about my ego, this is not about anyone’s ego here, and this is about a team. When Ed [Stefanski] hired Doug Collins, I called him and said, ‘Ed, you just made a great hire.’ I think Doug [Collins] is as knowledgeable a basketball man as I know. But he brings that passion and commitment that I think this organization needs. I’m very happy to be working with him. He came from San Diego over night to be here today. He didn’t have to do that, but he did to show the commitment that we all have, that we are a team, and that we are all in it together and if we are successful then everyone will get credit for it. We have some good pieces this year team-wise. We are like everyone else in that we can always use more, but I like some of the pieces we have. In talking with Ed [Stefanski] and talking with Doug [Collins] who are more familiar than I with the actual inner-workings, they feel the same way. Last year for whatever reason we took a little step back, and we don’t want to take any more steps back. We want to take steps forward. That’s what we are looking for, and that’s what all of us will be working together to do.
Again, Ed [Stefanski] and I have a history. We had seven pretty good years with the Nets. In fact, some say when Ed [Stefanski] left, the Nets weren’t as good. I have a tremendous respect for Ed [Stefanski] both on a personal and professional level. I look forward to working with him as we go forward. He understands me, and I think I understand him, and I think we make a good team. Hopefully that will take effect and be something that we can all be proud of here.
When you look at the history of this franchise, it’s been a terrific one. Some of the best players in the history of the league have come through here. Back in my days as a player this was a place that you did not want to come. The Convention Center with Chamberlain and Cunningham, and Jackson, Walker, Hal Greer and Wally Jones and that crew. It was very tough to get a win when you came [to Philadelphia]. Throughout the years, Iverson, Charles Barkley, Doug Collins, Dr. J, There have been so many great players that have come through. The team that Chamberlain was with is arguably among the top two or three teams that has ever played in this league.
The defining thread through all of that is that Philadelphia teams always had a passion and always played hard .The fans of Philadelphia are forgiving if you display that type of spirit. It’s the type of spirit that Doug [Collins] is about, and it’s the type of spirit that this team will play with. It’s not good enough to give a 75% effort. We expect and demand that our players play together, number one, and to play hard every night. That is what the fans want, and that is what the fans deserve. The fans don’t owe you anything, you owe the fans. We as an organization will demand from our players, and get from our players that effort on an every day basis. At the end of the day in my deciding to come here, you know there was a lot of speculation that I had retired. I didn’t retire, I retired from the Nets, but I was never retired. I expected to be back in basketball, I had several opportunities, but this was the one that I felt that I can come in and make some sort of a difference.
I am very, very happy to be here, I look forward to it. Expect us to do well, and all of us will do everything in our power to put a product on the floor that you will be proud of, that you will want to come and see, and that you will be happy to be a fan of. Once again I want to thank Peter [Luukko] and Eddie [Stefanski], and I am looking forward – I am very excited to be here. As I drove down from New York at about 7:15am, I got more excited every minute to be in Philadelphia. Just thinking about the good things that we can do together and thinking about the history of this franchise, and thinking about where it has been and where we can take it. I look forward to working with all of you, and for me it starts today.
Ed Stefanski: It seems like we’ve been meeting a lot of times here. Some good, some bad. One bad one in April, but the rest have been great, and today is another great day. As Peter [Luukko] and Rod [Thorn] said we were fortunate to get the consensus college player of the year in Evan Turner with the second pick, huge day when we got Doug [Collins]. To get a high-profile coach like Doug is exactly what we need for this team. What he has done already in a short few months – he and his staff going out and meeting players and then me talking to a lot of our players, they are so excited to get here and to be coached by Doug. I’m not putting pressure on Doug, but we are excited that he’s here and he’s the right guy for the position.
As I said, going into today’s conference, most people know that Rod is my mentor in the NBA. He taught me a lot of things about the NBA, and besides that we are close friends. I know Rod, he knows me. We work extremely well together. I think we were a hell of a team in New Jersey and I think the results showed. There is no reason to say we’re not going to do the same thing here. We will work hard to get this back to where we were. We were disappointed in last year, taking a step back after moving forward, but as Peter [Luukko] said, he adds depth to our organization. When a guy like Rod Thorn is out there, you have to go for it. So when Peter [Luukko] told me what we were doing, I endorsed it. Rod is extremely knowledgeable and this is only going to help our organization. But if you get in to sports, it’s about winning. If you are in it for any other reason, I can’t even imagine. Everyone is passionate about winning, and I can tell the fans – in getting the second pick, hiring Doug Collins, and now getting Rod Thorn – I think it’s great for the future of this organization.
Q. Why would you resign, and then take another job in the NBA? Was it resignation?
A. It was a resignation. To be perfectly candid, I was offered a lucrative contract to stay with the Nets. Over the course of ten years during my time with the Nets, most of it was great. The last couple of years we dismantled the team on purpose, because of corporate decisions so that wasn’t much fun. But I think my instincts are pretty good, and my feeling was that my time had run its course there. So my feeling was that it was time to go for me, and time for the Nets. There are no nefarious reasons, no smoking guns. It was just a personal decision to do that. Again, I don’t have anything bad to say about the Nets, they treated me well in my time there. We put a lot of banner, all of us together, in that arena that they’ve never had before. So I am proud of most of the things that transpired there, but it was just time to go.
Q. Wasn’t that it for you then? Why did you decide to come back?
A. (Thorn) When I left, I said to the new Nets owner that I expect to be in basketball, I’m not retiring. There were a lot of stories written, which I’ve caught a lot of grief for my wife where one said that she urged me to retire. She said everyone who knows us, though, knows she didn’t urge me at all. I expected to stay in basketball and was fortunate to have a few opportunities to do so. After meeting with Ed, this was the place where I felt I had a chance to make a contribution. I felt this organization was a good place for me to be.
Q. Ed, having done both jobs, do you think it’s best to have two people, two minds as opposed to one?
Stefanski: It is tough to do both jobs. The basketball side of it, to be able to narrow it down to just that is positive. But I agree with you, both jobs are very time consuming and overwhelming.
Luukko: If you look at sports today, whether it’s basketball, or hockey, or anything, you look at the demands of an executive in sports and it is very difficult to hold both position. You’re looking at managing and being with your coaching staff on a day to day basis; you’re looking at scouting, you’ve got various business and community responsibilities. I see Rod very involved in that. There is a lot going on in a sports organization, and this was just an incredibly unique opportunity for us. We weren’t talking to anyone else, but when we saw Rod was available and what he can do for us, and the depth he can bring to this organization. One thing that he’s agreed to do is stay on as a consultant once he leaves his position. So to have that depth and vice as we move forward is a great opportunity.
Thorn: I would agree with what Eddie [Stefanski] and Peter [Luukko] said. In this case, there is not going to be any back biting or that type of thing where two people are fighting with each other. This is all about team. I respect Ed, I respect his opinion, and I respect him as a human being. He and I will get along great, and there will be no problem along those lines.
Q. What is the first thing that you see this team needs in order to move forward?
Thorn: I think that would be a little naive on my part to say exactly what the team needs. Today is my first day, and I’m not one to make precipitous decisions. When I went to New Jersey, I said when I came in, ‘A lot of you people I know, and a lot of you people I don’t. I will make decisions over the next couple of months regarding what I am and am not going to do,’ That’s what I’m going to do here. A lot of people in the scouting aspect, I have respect for them. Until you are there, you may have some idea when you’re with another team about what’s going on with other teams, but until you’re there you don’t really know. I want to take a look at it, be here to feel it, to actually see it, before I make any decisions.
Q. How unique was it that Rod was the guy, allowing ego to stay out of the way?
Stefanski: Everyone has an ego; it’s to what degree you have that ego. It could have been a lot worse if Peter [Luukko] said it was someone else. When he said Rod Thorn, like I said, he is my mentor and close friend, so we’re not going to have any issue; we haven’t skipped a beat. We had a meeting in New York and it was just like old times. We’re like the Odd Couple; we have no problem getting each other. We know each other’s strengths and we know how to help each other.
Q. Considering the way things went in New Jersey the last couple of years, how confident were you in getting another opportunity?
Thorn: I had no clue what may or may not be available. But as I said, I was fortunate to have several opportunities to do things of this nature. I feel very fortunate.
Q. Was the organization looking for a team President?
Peter Luukko: No. As I said before we seized the opportunity. It’s later in the summer, so it was strictly the availability of Rod Thorn. It’s a great opportunity for the organization. You can see by the relationship that the two men have. The idea is to put the best team on the court, the best scouting team, and the best executive team to win it all for the fans. It was a very unique opportunity and we were very smart to take advantage of that.
